Bought This Piece For My Dad And Hasn't Put It Down Since.
A phenomenal book on tacos and their history. Uniquely written and presented in an unpretentious manner for true taco enthusiasts and aficionados. Buen Provecho!
The Tacopedia cover in a consistent and candid way the different type of tacos, and allied dishes and salsas. Sorry, don’t be offended if you don’t find “Taco Bell” or “Del Taco”, since this volume cover only tacos from Mexico. Just to name a few styles covered on the book al carbon (charbroilded), pastor (gyros-carrousel cooked), carnitas (fried pork), dorados (fried tacos), guisado (made of different dishes), barbacoa and birria (lamb and goat), fish and seafood. Give tips where to have the best of each kind, and includes a tacography, or the geography of the tacos, different regions, different tacos. Regarding the allied foods, quesadillas, burritos, burritas, gringas and chivichangas (note not chimichangas) are also covered. Well researched and with, very important, a comprehensive index. It also covered the multiple salsas used, yes more than verde (green) o roja (red)… The book is illustrated with very compelling and truthful pictures and funny (some may consider raunchy) cartoons from the Mexican ethos.
Yeah, this book is pretty much incredible. If you're a taco fan, you just gotta find it. The graphic layout is impressive - it's packed with "truer-than-life" photos, drawings, schemas, illustrations everywhere, so if you're into graphic design, this is page layout p*rn at its best! There are lots of recipes and addresses (and not mainstream tourist-ey shops, but literally in middle-of-nowhere) where you can find every variation of tacos.
We didn't cook from it yet, so can't comment on the food, but it sure looks damn authentic and delicious to me.
Yeah, well, the downside is that it's entirely written in Spanish by Mexicans for Mexicans, so you won't find such an authentic and complete book about tacos anywhere else. But not all hope is lost we heard that Phaidon will release an english version of this book in September 2015, so let's hope the fun, vibrance, and graphic design packed in those pages won't get lost in translation.
In any case, if you dream carnitas, cochinita pibil, chicharron, and anything else that goes in tacos (and you obviously do, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this...), you won't regret buying this book, even if it's just to look at the pictures and have that perfect excuse to learn Spanish!
